Important Questions for Our Times

Why is it that people so very often reply-all when it's totally inappropriate?

And then people fail to reply-all when it would make life so much easier for all involved?

What's that about?

Okay, I have a confession. I occasionally, though I hate to do so and it stresses me out, reply-all, and even add in a couple of people in a sort of political power struggle maneuver when in a "discussion" via e-mail. Also the same reason I occasionally don't reply-all.

Usually it is a case where I am under pressure to get a particular answer or approval in regards to what a ranking faculty member wants to do. By replying-all I hope to rally others to my cause, by omitting people I hope to keep the discussion at a level where I don't have others rallying to the other side.
